Golpayegani Typeface creation
The Golpayegani typeface has been recreated (reconstructed) using the works of Behzad Golpayegani, a graphic designer (1938–1985), in two styles: simple and textured.
This font was first extracted and reconstructed by Studio Daftar for the design of the book Behzad Golpayegani, based on the works of this artist. The book Behzad is the result of nearly two years of research on Behzad Golpayegani, a contemporary graphic designer, and was published in January 2020 by Nazar Publishing.

Golpayegani was among the first entrants to the Decorative Arts School and one of the initial members of the “Saqakhaneh School” of artists. After various artistic experiences, he ultimately chose graphic design as his profession and found book cover design a suitable medium to express his ideas. During his years at Franklin Publications, he pioneered the first fully typography-focused collection in the history of Iranian graphic design.
His cover designs were the result of continuous study of letter structures and word compositions. Attention to negative space, play with sizes, positive and negative areas, and the semantic relationship between form and content are among the distinctive characteristics of this designer’s advanced and influential works.

Behzad modeled the texts in his works based on “black letters” (Zar). During the design process, the proportions and shapes of the letters would change, eventually creating entirely new forms.

To reconstruct the Golpayegani font, the letters that underwent the most deformation in this process were extracted and incorporated into the final composition.
Behzad’s ideas were so ahead of their time that it took two decades for later designers to understand, repeat, and expand upon them.
In another major achievement, Golpayegani created the series “White on White”. In these pieces, he demonstrated his extraordinary mastery over letters and his ability to work with minimal visual elements.

Behzad Golpayegani had a short but highly productive professional life. However, the path he had started was cut short not by his choice but by the inevitability of premature death.
The research and writing of the book Behzad were carried out by Majid Kashani and Meraj Ghanbari.
