Formation of the Modam Typeface

One of my concerns is designing typefaces for use in the digital gaming space and various mediums on the web. In the fall of 2021, when I participated in online type design classes with my mentor Damon Khanjanzadeh, I shared this idea and concern with him, and he warmly welcomed it.

Amidst the extensive discussions covering theory, formal and visual analyses, concept analysis, formal studies, and finally, letterform design studies, the Modam typeface emerged. I named it "Modam." I will publish the process of studies, research, and design of this typeface, along with what I learned from him along this journey, in a separate article.

Introduction to the Modam Typeface

The Modam typeface features a simple structure, skeletal elements, and open negative spaces. Due to its expressive spirit and high degree of geometric proportions, this typeface is suitable for titles and short to medium-length texts.

Startups, designers, and game, web, and app developers can be the primary users of this typeface.

8 Weights + Condensed Style

The Modam typeface offers 8 weights ranging from thin to bold, addressing all the needs of graphic design projects and brand identity.

Given that in most games, alongside the readability and legibility of the text, there is a need for excitement and energy conveyed through the visual aspect of the letters. Additionally, considering the constraints in software (boxes and buttons) and layout columns, a condensed style for this font has been designed. In compressing the font, efforts have been made to maintain the letterforms without introducing distortions. Also, in this compression, the thickness of the letters has remained as consistent as possible. For example, the thickness of letters in the regular weight is the same as the thickness in the condensed regular weight; only the letterforms have been condensed.

Variable Font in Modam Typeface

In the professional Modam font package, you can use 16 fonts (8 weights + condensed style) in the form of a variable font. A variable font is the best choice for web design. It is lightweight, loads your page faster, and allows you to use all weights and styles without limitations. Additionally, you can use the variable font in the latest versions of software like Photoshop, Illustrator, and more.

The variable font in Modam has 2 axes for weight and width (condensation).

Modam font is designed for both Persian and Arabic languages, and it also supports Urdu, Kurdish, and English languages.

Equal-width Numbers!

One of the features considered in the Madam font is the use of Tabular lining. By activating this feature in graphic software such as Illustrator and Photoshop, you can write numbers in a tabular format without the need for tables.

In the Modam Font Package, you will receive the following:

  1. Main Fonts: In ttf format, with 8 weights.
  2. Condensed Fonts: In ttf format, with 8 weights.
  3. Variable Font: A variable font with 2 axes: Weight / Condensed.
  4. Web Fonts: Special fonts for use on websites in woff and woff2 formats, along with CSS and HTML codes.
  5. Fonts with Persian Numbers: Fonts where English numbers are modified to be displayed in Persian.
  6. Fonts without English: Fonts that do not include English characters (suitable for combining with an English font of your choice in web design).

Modam font supports Persian, Arabic, Kurdish, Urdu, and English languages.
